2023 Official Huēhuēcoyotl T-Shirt

Everyone loves Huēhuecoyōtl - and now he's on a shirt!

Huēhuecoyōtl is an old (technically old old) coyote god of art, music, dance, mischief, pranks, and song in the Guatemalan pantheon. He's also apparently the patron of uninhibited sexuality - he himself is depicted as bisexual. Of course, no one in the band knew this when we named ourselves (even though Del is half Guatemalan himself), but when we found out, it fit perfectly - especially for Pride season and the addition of more Latin songs to our sets!

We actually learned about Huēhuecoyōtl from our designer and videographer, Amy C., who is an unrepentent nerd when it comes to this stuff. Her vision of Huēhuecoyōtl is more coyote-like in appearance and far more colorful and intricate in detail, but still carries the traditional symbols of his status and powers. I guess he is sometimes a dude and sometimes a coyote, although the Aztec version of a coyote looks more like a rat than a dog.

He's also a wish granter, but when he grants wishes it's usually with a cruel and ironic twist. Even knowing that, he's celebrated and loved by all who worship him. According to Amy, Huēhuecoyōtl is Aztec in origin (whereas Guatemalans are Mayan in origin), but was such a fun and relatable god that many Mayan cultures adopted him. He was also secretly adopted by colonizers and missionaries in Mexico and Central America.

People literally couldn't help but love him, even if it meant bending the rules of their own belief systems.
